Gabriel Aroso - Osteopath

My name is Gabriel Aroso and in brief words I’ll tell you how Osteopathy appeared in my life, what is it and how it can help you.

I worked in nursing for 6 years when in the Summer of 2012 due to a pain in my right wrist I asked my Osteopath friend for help. I didn’t understand what he did but the pain was gone and I recovered full mobility in my wrist. Two questions had emerged: What happened ? How did he treat me with only his hands, without the use of any medication or invasive tecniques ? I was curious.

In that same year, I applied for a Osteopathy course that lasted from 2012 to 2014. Following that I did supervised internship for 6 months.

As an Osteopath I can treat and improve the quality of life of those who seek me, releasing them from acute and chronic pains caused from daily postures, osteoarticular diseases, adhensions from surgical interventions, traumas, scars and little incidents from the day to day life, I can also treat vestibular syndromes that provoke changes in the balance and vertigo, among other signs and symptoms.

If you’re experiencing any pain or changes in your balance, contact me. I’m here to help.

What does Osteopathy treat?

Osteopathy has a high treatment range since it can be applied to the whole body.

  • Sore or dormant hands, fingers and feet
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Vertiginous syndrome(balance loss)
  • Dorsal and lumbar pain
  • Hip and knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Cervical pain
  • Muscle contractures
  • Scoliosis
  • Tendinitis
  • Groin pain
  • Sciatica
  • Sprains
  • Hernias
  • Kyphosis

Ostheopathy has 4 base concepts: Holism, Structure vs Function, Law of the Artery and Self-healing. It doesn’t treat pathologies nor injuries but Somatic Dysfunctions(SD), also known as Osteopathic Lesions, and it has its own diagnostic method based on the evaluation of the Asymmetries, Restrictions and Soft Tissues, known in Osteopathy as ARS diagnostic.

Base concepts in Osteopathy:

Somatic Dysfunction(SD) – any disturbance in the function of the body structure, for instance, skeletal, articulary and myofascial structure, vascular elements(veins and arteries), lymphatics and associated nerves.

Holism – the body has to be evaluated and treated as a whole, in order to be balanced. The Ostheopathy treats the cause of pain, not only the pain itself. The body structures that are disturbed create compensations in the body as a defense mechanism provoking somatic dysfunctions. Many times the cause of pain is located in a far zone from the anatomical region that’s in pain. However, diagnosing and treating the disturbances to its normal state, according to the body structure, recovering the functional and dynamic balance, within the limits of each person, and fading the pain away. The objective of Osteopathy is to achieve Balance, in other words, Homeostasis.

Structure vs Function – for every body structure(muscle, tendon, fascia, nerve, bone, etc.) there is one or more specific function.

Law of the Artery – Blood and its derivatives (for instance lymph and cerebrospinal fluid) have primary fuctions: to oxygenate, to nourish, to "clean" and to detoxify the cells. By regaining structural balance, homeostasis, conditions for the normal flow of the areas to treat are created allowing to optimize the role of the blood and its derivatives, benefiting the tissues irrigated by them.

Self-healing – When restoring the balance of the body structures, this has the ability to finish the cure process.

Osteopathy’s Bennefits

  • Osteophaty’s work is fundamental in order to maintain the structural balance
  • It corrects and prevents unbalances that may become irreversible
  • It can be applied since a baby age up to the senior age
  • Slows down the joint wear’s symptoms
  • Nerve conduction problems (lack of sensation in the extremities)
  • Strength and flexibility stimulation
  • Posture improvement / Correction

The 1º appointment consists in what ?

The first appointment normally consists in information gathering about the problem, a physical exam, treatment and counseling about strecthing and/or exercises depending on the situation to be addressed.

Main techniques of Osteopathy

Osteopathy doesn’t only eliminate the consequences of the problem, it always tries to uncover the reason behind the symptom in order to treat the patient.

For this, an osteopath uses his hands as an instrument, resorting to various techniques, being the following the most common:

  • Myofascial techniques: working with facial, muscle and tendon tissues of the human body;
  • Cranial techniques: they’re the most subtle that allow to treat the entire body, starting from the cranium;
  • Visceral techniques: dealing with organs and the relations between them;
  • Neural mobilization techniques: it improves the nerve conduction and it treats dormant hands, fingers and other limbs;
  • Lymphatic and imune techniques: improves the immunity and lymphatic circulation;
  • Wrist manipulation techniques: it has the objective to readjust the articulation, even if your displacement is minimal or invisible in the xrays;
